Ohio

The Buckeye State sits between Indiana to the west and Pennsylvania and West Virginia to the east and is separated from Kentucky by the Ohio River. Michigan and Lake Erie border Ohio to the north. When Ohio was opened up to settlement in 1785, many of the first homesteaders arrived to stake their claims by floating down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh. Much laborious clearing of the land was necessary before farming could begin. Today, Ohio is a key part of the Midwest’s Corn and Grain Belts. At the turn of the 19th century, John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, began his tree-planting campaign in Ohio; he set up nurseries throughout Ohio and in parts of Illinois and Indiana. By the mid-1800s, before Chicago was “hog butcher for the world,” Cincinnati was known as “Porkopolis” because of its importance as a meat-packing place. Modern residents of Cincinnati can boast of a trademark dish: Cincinnati Chili. It comes any of "five ways": as a straight-up bowl of chili, served over spaghetti, and topped with beans, cheese and/or onions. It is thought to have been the invention of Greek immigrants.

About me:
I was born in Iceland because my father was stationed there in the Navy soon after my parents were married. I had dual citizenship until I was 18 but like most people living in the great United States, I am proud to be an American. I am happily married to a patient man who willingly eats my culinary experiments and we have 4 fur kids (a.k.a. cats) that we adore.

Easy Apple Strudel

Reviewed on Sep. 7, 2008 by RALWATTAR
The base recipe is a good idea but it needs tweaking. I added cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, vanilla extract, and walnuts. I also used phyllo dough sheets instead of puff pastry (personal preference), but I imagine it would also taste delicious with puff pastry. I drizzled slices of strudel with maple syrup as a final touch. Took this to a party and I got rave reviews, so will make again.

Jalapeno Popper Spread

Reviewed on Sep. 7, 2008 by Monica
I made this for a party this weekend, and everyone loved it! The only things I did differently were using only canned jalapenos because the store was apparently experiencing some sort of hot pepper shortage, and I put some bread crumbs on top before baking.

My family loved these! I scaled the recipe back to 18 servings and used Rick's buttercream frosting recipe from this site.
